Web Cam vs. Live Streaming

web cameras

...convert our live video camera output to photo jpeg files. These photos are uploaded to an Internet website and updated typically once every 2 - 5 seconds or longer. As a result, the viewer sees about 15 framesper minute, which is adequate for more or less static content (like stacking a dog). For dog show or show dog purposes, this gives the viewer a preview of the show, but it is not able to show smooth continuous movement.

Live streaming

...converts video camera output to digital files like flash video, QuickTime, or Windows media. These files are uploaded to an Internet streaming server at a rate of 15 - 30 frames per second or about 1,800 frames per minute! It produces quite nice viewing results for continuous movement desirable for dog shows. Significant bandwidth and computer resources are required.

Show Dog Video Pros

...offers WEBCAM viewing at no charge. Video streaming requires dedicated computer programming and the services of a specialized Internet streaming service (Fees do apply).

For both WEBCAM and LIVE STREAMING an appropriate Internet hook-up is necessary. Most hotels offer wireless Internet, which is sufficient. For outdoor shows, we use 3G cell phone technology to offer these services. Accordingly, the outdoor show site must be served by a 3G cell tower (e.g. AT&T) to provide the necessary Internet access.
